These trends have us in a chokehold.

A new year means a whole host of new beauty trends. From bleached eyebrows and a goth revival to a Pamela Anderson-inspired ’90s bombshell aesthetic, the beauty trends set to dominate 2023 are pretty eclectic.

We’re keeping an eye on holistic beauty regimes, like Swisse Beauty’s Inside and Out offering, which brings together beauty supplements with hardworking serums for a 360 approach to skincare.

I asked Melbourne-based makeup artist Jack Cail to weigh in on the trending styles of 2023 and to share whether these trends are timeless or temporary and if they’re worth the hype.

Goth revival

Director Tim Burton has ended up instigating one of the year’s most popular makeup and hair trends. Inspired by actress Jenna Ortega’s new spin on the morbid Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series, Wednesday, graphic eyeliner, feathered fringes and plaited ponytails are all the rage, especially with Gen Z.

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) showed us that the sultry smokey ’90s gothic look is here to stay, so expect to see more graphic liner and heavy-handed, smudged kohl on the horizon. “At NYFW we saw such a grungier side to the liner. Rather than clean lines, we saw everything smudged, almost as if the model could have done it themselves. I think this totally speaks to the fact that makeup has been leaning less into polished and refined and more into [a] lived-in look,” Jack tells me.

Beauty from within

With bare faces taking the covers of magazines and skin minimalism becoming a trend that’s sticking, skincare is getting its own glow-up. Science meets skincare with holistic beauty routines that go further than skin deep.

Take Swisse Beauty’s offering, a respected, science-backed brand bringing formulations that make sense. Swisse Beauty’s Multivitamin Beauty Complex is a highlight, a digestible combination of marine collagen and sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid), along with 13 other vitamins, minerals and herbs to be prepared as a daily ritual for inside and out beauty support.

Megastar brands

Rihanna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, where she touched up her makeup mid-performance with a Fenty powder, was a timely reminder of the enduring popularity of celebrity makeup brands.

It’s not just Fenty; Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty Liquid Blush has continuously sold out across the globe and Makeup by Mario’s (the brand founded by Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic) Surreal Skin Foundation is currently trending online.

Jack sees a distinction between a celebrity brand and a brand made by a celebrity makeup artist. “As a makeup artist, I can definitely see a difference between lines by celebrities and lines by makeup artists. Makeup by Mario has developed his products as an artist, which is why his products speak to me on another level.

“[Mario’s] range is much smaller than Rare Beauty or Fenty, but my kit is full of it because the formulas and finishes give me all I need for a multitude of clients. It’s clear that he knows how to make quality products really well.”

’90s bombshell

Since the release of her Netflix series Pamela, a Love Story and the popularity of the Hulu series Pam and Tommy, Pamela Anderson’s ’90s blonde bombshell look has taken over social media. Pamela’s renaissance has shown us that she was more than just a sex symbol – she created trends we’re still seeing everywhere today: thin eyebrows, messy updos and overlined lips.

If you’re trying to achieve this classic sexy look, Jack recommends a brow gel and a Mac lip liner to seal the deal. “I personally think that brows are the aspect of the face that changes the most with trends. In only the past few years we’ve seen sculpted, fluffy and thin eyebrows. You can create any of those looks with Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze. It is simply a thick brow gel that can manipulate the brow hairs into any desired shape, and once dried will stay all day.

“For that classic Pam pout, Mac lip liners will save you. These bad boys will always be in my kit. For the ’90s cool toned lip, shades like Cork, Spice and Chestnut have been around for years and were actually used in the nineties and noughties to create those looks.”

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
