Emilia Clarke on streamlining her skincare and the one look she’ll never do again

Emilia Clarke is one well-informed beauty consumer. “I read all the beauty articles in newspapers and magazines,” the 36 year-old actress and founder of brain injury charity SameYou enthusiastically tells Bazaar over Zoom. “Also, because I’ve got wonderful make-up artists in my life, I follow them on Instagram and I’ll [emulate] what they’re doing.” But the Game of Thrones star takes a careful approach to trends, understanding that editorial looks aren’t always made for daily wear and that it’s always a great idea to “look at someone who looks like me” for inspiration.

From sporting bleached blonde lengths to being an early adopter of soft-goth glam, Clarke’s beauty philosophy is one that is steeped in elegance but not without a sprinkling of joy. Her mood this spring? “I’m trying to take my make-up routine a little lightly and have more fun with it.”

Ahead, she shares her non-negotiable skincare step, the make-up she uses for that English Rose aesthetic and the one look she’ll never do again.

On testing new trends…

“It’s going to sound really mad, but when I don’t think I can pull off an eyeshadow or a lipstick, I’ll do a little road test in Sainsbury’s. Pick a day where you’re not doing too much, try on the lipstick and see how you feel walking down the street. Ask: ‘Are people looking at me like I’m crazy? Do I feel good?’ Then when you wear it to your event or party, it’s not completely new to you. I did it recently with a bright coral lipstick and it’s now my new favourite lip colour. It has allowed me to be bolder.”

On her holistic morning ritual…

“The morning time is for me to try and calm my brain down. I do yoga every morning for 15 minutes. I meditate, then I get to my beauty care. I use a cleanser, toner and moisturiser. If I need it, I’ll do a sheet mask; I use Rodial Pink Diamond. I’ll put it on and get into the shower since I don’t get my face wet. I’ll also use a face roller after moisturising.”

On going back to skincare basics…

“My skin goes through cycles. It’s sensitive; it’s currently having a hissy fit as I’ve been working for 18 months non-stop and I had different people putting different things on my face. So, right now, I’m in a very stripped-back phase using just the bare basics of what I need. I use the Clinique All About Clean cleanser, the Clinique Clarifying Lotion and Moisture Surge, which has SPF25 but I also use the Clinique sunscreen on top.”

On her one non-negotiable skincare step…

“The first thing I do when I get in is take my make-up off, even when I’m blacked out drunk. It means you don’t have to do it later. It’s something I’ve been doing twice a day, every day, since I was 13. It’s like brushing your teeth or having breakfast.”

On her relaxation routine…

“I use a foam roller in the morning and sometimes before I go to bed. With my job, I’m standing, fighting or doing a photoshoot and having meetings with people. I get home and just feel so tense. I might do an Epsom salt bath. Anything you can do to relax your muscles will allow your brain to relax, too. I’ll journal, and if I have time I’ll meditate. I sleep with an eye mask, a silk one.”

On her make-up routine…

“I always put on a foundation or tinted moisturiser. I’ll do eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara but the colours might change with the seasons. I’ve recently started wearing blusher. Clinique Cheek Pops are amazing, with the gorgeous flower emboss. I’m very pale, so unless I have a tan, I’ll lean into the English Rose look. I’ll do a sugary pink on my lips. Something that makes me feel like I’ve been out on a picnic.”

On her holiday beauty must-haves…

“I use a holiday SPF – with higher protection, and Moisture Surge because that works if you’ve been out in the sun a lot and all your skin needs is moisture. When I’m on holiday I don’t put any foundation on. Just a bit of mascara and a bright lip, big earrings, a fabulous dress and a tan.”

On caring for her hair…

“Bleaching was the dumbest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I will never ever do it again! My hair fell out – I was not happy. I did all the masks but nothing worked so I had to cut it all off. Now, I’m fastidious with taking care of my hair. I use specific hair towels and I’ve just discovered this volumising product from R+Co, which is foamy. I make sure to use silk hair ties and I get regular trims – I’ll just get them to do it whenever I’m at a photoshoot.”

On when she feels most beautiful…

“This is going to sound so corny but I feel most beautiful when I’m with friends and family. I certainly don’t feel my most beautiful on the red carpet. Dare me to find someone who does – it’s the scariest place on earth. But when I’m with my family and friends, out celebrating or having a good time, if I’m hosting a dinner or if I’m round someone else’s for lunch… it’s how people make you feel that makes you feel good.”
