From a perfected complexion to bold sweeps of eyeliner, here are her five favourites:
Spring beauty is all about a perfected complexion and bold pops of colour, according to Chanel makeup artist Julie Cusson. Chanel
No. 1: NATURAL AND SOPHISTICATED COMPLEXION
According to Cusson, this spring and summer season sees skin appear “polished yet natural.” The makeup pro says the complexion should look “fresh and hydrated” and have an overall radiance. Her pro application tip to achieve this perfected look is to choose a lightweight foundation, which will leave the face looking “illuminated and refined” rather than weighed down with makeup. “Dabbing the foundation with fingers or a blender brush is the secret to getting a flawless texture,” Cusson advises.

Recommended product: Les Beiges Water-Fresh Complexion Touch ($85 at Holt Renfrew and Chanel.com)
No. 2: VIVID EYELINER
“The new way to wear a winged-liner or a cat-eye this season is to use coloured eyeliner instead of a classic black shade,” Cusson says. The makeup expert says opting for a waterproof formula is “always a must” during the warmer-weather months in order to resist any smudging or smearing caused by sebum and humidity around the eyes. For hues, Cusson recommends choosing a “vibrant shade” such as metallic blue or vibrant green to really make the eyes come alive.
Recommended product: Try Stylo Yeux Waterproof in 46 Vert Émeraude or 38 Bleu Métal. ($42 at Holt Renfrew and Chanel.com)
No. 3: BLUSHING INTO SUMMER

“Blush is back!” according to Cusson. The Chanel pro suggests choosing shades that reside in the berry and rosewood realms for the most in-vogue appearance. “A flush of colour on the cheeks, matched with a minimalist makeup look, is refined and elegant,” Cusson summarizes. Another hot tip for the season is to layer different shades of blush for a cool, customized look. The effect, Cusson says, makes a statement. “Layering different shades of blush is very current this season, to bring an impactful makeup look. The colour should be applied in the crease of the cheek and from the apple of the cheek, slightly up to the temple.”
Recommended product: Les 4 Rouges Yeux et Joues in 957 Tendresse, from the Chanel Spring-Summer 2023 makeup collection. ($103 at Holt Renfrew and Chanel.com)

No. 4: DEWY SKIN
Finishes go beyond glossy this season with an appearance that “almost looks wet,” according to Cusson. The high-gloss effect, she says, can breathe life into a “flat” makeup look. “Adding a gloss texture on the eyelid, the bridge of the nose and on the apple of the cheek is a very nice and modern way to add highlights and dimension to the skin,” Cusson says. She suggests opting for a tinted gloss rather than something clear for a high-fashion look, pointing to red or rosé hues for added “freshness and chicness.”
Recommended product: Baume Essentiel in Dragée from the Délices Pastel de Chanel makeup collection. ($60 at Holt Renfrew and Chanel.com)
No. 5: COLOURFUL SMILE
Spring and summer aren’t complete without a bold lipstick look. “Vivid shades like orange-red and coral on lips are a must this colourful summer,” Cusson says. “Whether its sheer, matte or opaque, any texture will work!” Cusson suggests pairing a vibrant colour on lips with a more muted, natural eye makeup for a fresh spring look.
Recommended product: Rouge Allure Velvet in 47 Flamboyante. ($52 at Holt Renfrew and Chanel.com)
